CASE STUDY: Sketching Skill Gap - 2015, Columbia College Chicago
While teaching design students at 3 different colleges, I observed a skill gap with students in my Columbia classes, who were flagging in their ability to sketch rapid concepts - a crucial design skill. I developed the "Sketch Telephone" project: The students were asked do 10 restyling sketches of a small handheld product. Then they would hand their best concept to the person sitting to their right, for that person to restyle 10 times. We did this 'telephone' handoff over 10 weeks, so that each student would end up with 100 sketches of different products. We pinned up the hundreds of sketches in a gallery and analyzed the progress. Conspicuous improvement resulted, and a high percentage of students stated loving the project, and years later, still credit the project for taking them to the next level in a valuable skill. |
